2019 General Mountaineering Camp (GMC) Photo Contest

Mountain Hardwear returned this year for their third year in a row to sponsor our GMC Photo Contest - without them, this contest wouldn’t exist!

We had quite the spread of weather during the GMC weeks, so the photos saw a lot of variety - which made it quite difficult to pick winners…. but alas, we did it. A big ‘thank you’ to everyone who submitted photos for the contest, it was a whole lot of fun to go through them!

Three things that make the Canadian Alpine Journal Worth reading

We don’t often print opinion pieces in Aspects – we typically focus more on ACC programs and adventures stories in our blog. But in this piece, ACC Communications Specialist Peter Hoang shares some strong feelings about how we digest adventure stories and about the value of the printed story in general, and the ACC’s Canadian Alpine Journal specifically, in our increasingly digital age. Pete knows more than a bit about digital media (he handles all ACC social channels), photography (he’s a professional climbing shooter) and climbing, so this is right up his alleys.

1949 GMC: The art of slowing down

With the first week of our 2019 GMC stated to begin this weekend, we thought it would be fun to look back on the 1949 GMC from a quaint (and gorgeous) journal we received.

Our GMC’s have always been a place where participants can unplug and reflect on the environment, make new friends and explore new terrain. The journal does a perfect job at explaining why these things are so special and why it’s important to slow down to have these types of experiences.

Six questions with Sean Isaac

Sean Isaac’s been a long-time ACMG Alpine Guide that often joins us on ACC Adventures, whether it be leading our Early Season Ice course, Hut Discovery programs or teaching technical rock skills. His passion has already helped many people improve their technique and push their grade.

In an effort to help our guests learn more about the background of their guides, we thought we’d sit down for a few short questions with Sean.

Fairy Meadow Alpine Granite

Perhaps most of us know the Fairy Meadow (Bill Putnam) Hut best for its world-class ski terrain, but did you know that past the snow there’s uncrowded Bugaboo granite to climb?

For the first time ever, we’re offering multi-day package flights into Fairy Meadow for the summer, so we thought we’d highlight what the amazing granite in the Adamant and Gothics Group have to offer for those looking for seclusion in the hills.

Girls on Ice Canada Clothing Drive

Because Girls on Ice Canada is aimed at underprivileged young women who have never been on glaciers and who aren’t kitted out for mountain travel, we’re collecting gently-used gear for them.

If you’re looking to clear out some of your old gear to make room for new this summer, please consider a donation to Girls on Ice. The drop off is at Gear Up Sports in Canmore on June 6, 2:00 - 5:30pm.

Wolverine Watch – A project supported by the ACC Environment fund

Wolverines have been around in the Rocky Mountains since the ice age, but unfortunately their population has been considerably reduced over the last 50 years due to our changing climate and landscapes.

Our furry friends are now considered to be a species of Special Concern under the Canadian Species at Risk Act, so initiatives like Wolverine Watch have launched efforts to help understand wolverines and preserve the lives of one of our oldest living creatures.

Hitchhiking and Honeymooning in Antarctica (PART II)

Is there any better way to spend your honeymoon than by boating around the Antarctic Peninsula? Probably not. ACC Ambassador Nancy Hansen and high-altitude veteran Ralf Dujmovits venture to the deep South to climb, ski and sneak in a few extra activities, enjoying the type of honeymoon that we would totally expect from the adventurous couple.
